Nelson Mandela is the epitome of Agile Living and Agile Leadership, which is essentially about living in a way that exercises your freedom and expands freedom for others. Exercising your mental and emotional freedom is the foundation of Agile Living and creating all the other types of freedom that you might want for yourself and the people around you. In spite of having many of his freedoms severely constrained and restricted, and having his loved ones tortured and killed in terrible ways, Nelson Mandela chose to exercise mental and emotional freedom and to think and feel from a place of love and peace rather than fear, hatred and revenge. And this is in my view the reason he was able to be such a transformational leader.
In the Bottom-line on Invictus, you’ll learn:
- 1 simple, core leadership skill that Nelson Mandela used in 6 different ways, to understand and develop trust with South Africans of all backgrounds, so that they would follow him to his vision of peace.
- 12 actionable leadership strategies that Nelson Mandela used to stand up and share his vision and to lead and influence in spite of the obstacles and risks.
- How to be a truly transformational leader and lead your tribe when they don’t want what you know is best for them.
- How to have a truly agile and free mind, like Nelson Mandela, so that you can think and feel what you want, regardless of the constraints in your circumstances.
- That the human spirit is capable of so much more than you imagine – this was my biggest take-away when ex-ANC freedom fighter and political prisoner, Thulani Mabaso shared his incredibly amazing and inspiring story.

John Carlin
John is an incredibly experienced, celebrated and well-traveled writer, having written for most of the world’s big newspapers, magazines and media channels, including the London Observer, the Independent, the Sunday Times, the New York Times, the London Daily Telegraph, Wired; Conde Nast Traveler, the BBC radio and TV, PBS TV and many others. He’s currently a senior international writer for El Pais, the world’s leading newspaper in the Spanish language.
John has also been involved in the making of documentaries in the arena of sports and politics. Some of his documentaries include the Emmy-nominated PBS documentary, ‘The Long Walk of Nelson Mandela,’ a number of TV and radio documentaries for the BBC on Winnie Mandela, and the Channel Four TV documentaries about Diego Maradona and England-Argentina soccer rivalry. John has been involved in the making of two prominent feature films so far. He sold the rights to an article that he wrote for Wired magazine about information warfare, which Twentieth Century Fox used to create the film, Die Hard 4, starring Bruce Willis, and then of course his book, Invictus has been translated into 14 languages and made into the Warner Brothers film by the same name, starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, and directed by Clint Eastwood.
John has spent a lot of time researching and writing in the world of South African politics, and he’s also lived in Johannesburg and experienced life in South Africa firsthand, so he has a very rich view of some of the lessons we can learn from South Africa’s history and from Nelson Mandela as a leader.
